Pregnancy is a time of transition — physical, emotional, and relational. For many people, it’s a quieter chapter than expected, layered with anticipation, vulnerability, and change.

A maternity session isn’t about creating a version of pregnancy that looks a certain way. It’s about taking a moment to acknowledge where you are, and to document this chapter as it unfolds — before life shifts again.

When to plan a maternity session

Most maternity sessions take place between 28 and 34 weeks, when the body has settled into pregnancy and movement still feels relatively comfortable.

That said, timing is flexible. What matters more than a specific week is choosing a moment when you feel able to slow down and be present during the session.

If you’re unsure, we can talk it through and decide together what makes sense for you.

What a maternity session focuses on

My approach to maternity photography is simple and observational.

Sessions are unhurried, with gentle guidance when needed. There’s no expectation to pose or perform. Instead, we leave room for stillness, movement, and interaction — whether that’s moments on your own or time shared with your partner.

Rather than aiming for a particular look, the focus stays on:

  • how your body carries this moment

  • how you and your partner connect

  • the quiet details that mark this stage of life

Choosing a location

Maternity sessions can take place at home or outdoors, depending on what feels most natural to you.

At home, sessions tend to be slower and more intimate, shaped by familiar spaces and everyday gestures.

Outdoors, the rhythm often shifts — walking, pausing, and responding to light and surroundings. Both options work beautifully; neither is better than the other.

We’ll choose a location together based on the season, your comfort, and how you’d like the session to feel.

A note on expectations

This kind of work asks for openness rather than perfection. Comfort, warmth, and ease matter more than styling or ideal conditions.

You don’t need to prepare for a version of pregnancy that looks a certain way. Showing up as you are is enough.

Final thoughts

A maternity session is not about marking a milestone for its own sake. It’s about creating a record of a moment that passes quickly — often faster than we realise.

If you’re considering a maternity session and would like to talk through timing or approach, you’re welcome to get in touch or explore my portfolio to see how different families have chosen to document this chapter.
