When planning a photo session, one of the first questions is often:Where should we shoot?

It’s a natural one — because the location isn’t just a backdrop. It shapes how the session feels, how you move together, and what kind of moments have room to unfold.

A location doesn’t need to be spectacular to be meaningful. What matters most is how it supports the story you want to tell.

Different places, different rhythms

A session at home carries a very different energy than one outdoors.

At home, things tend to slow down. Familiar spaces invite closeness, quiet gestures, and small, everyday interactions — the kind that often go unnoticed until later.

Outdoors, there’s usually more movement. Walks, pauses, changes in light, and the way people naturally orient themselves in space all become part of the story. Some families feel most like themselves outside, others prefer the contained calm of home.

Neither is better. They simply tell different kinds of stories.

Choosing what feels right

The right location is less about what photographs well and more about what feels natural to you right now.

Some families are drawn to something simple and close to home. Others enjoy being outside, walking, or spending time in nature. Some want a place that feels familiar; others like a sense of openness.

Rather than asking, “What looks best?” it can help to ask:

  • Where do we feel at ease?

  • How do we naturally spend time together?

  • What kind of pace feels right for us right now?

These answers tend to lead to locations that support genuine connection.

Finding the location together

If you’re unsure where to shoot, that’s completely fine. Part of my work is helping you choose a location that fits your family, the season, and the way you’d like the session to feel.

I work with a range of tried and tested locations in and around Geneva — from homes and quiet neighbourhoods to natural settings nearby. We’ll decide together what makes sense, without forcing an idea or a mood.

Because the best location isn’t the most impressive one. It’s the one that gives your story room to unfold.
